Promoting a YouTube Channel on Reddit, Openly

Skip the subreddits made for channel promotion; they are mostly other creators. Find the topic communities where viewers ask for a channel or a how-to, answer the question in the comment itself, link the one video that covers it, and say it is your channel. Then judge it in YouTube Studio by returning viewers and subscribers, not clicks.

Why channel promo subreddits rarely build an audience

The first search most creators run sends them to subreddits that exist for sharing channels. A creator directory published in May 2026 by UniLink says most YouTube-related subreddits ban direct video promotion, and that in the promotion subreddits that do allow links, most users are other creators promoting their own work, with low engagement. An agency write-up from K6 describes channel promo subreddits as usually crowded, with little engagement from members.

A creator who clicks your video while waiting for you to click theirs is not your audience. They watch a few seconds and do not come back. Trading subscriptions is worse: YouTube's Spam Policy names coordinated sub-for-sub schemes and rewards for likes, views or subscribers as engagement manipulation.

Where viewers ask for a channel like yours

Viewers ask in communities about the topic itself, not about YouTube. The questions below are illustrative examples of the pattern.

Example questions and what a useful reply contains
The question in a topic communityWhat a useful reply gives them
Channels that teach woodworking joinery for beginners without constant tool ads?Two or three channels, what each is good at, and which video to start with
Any YouTubers doing honest budget travel in Central Asia?Channels that show real costs, plus the one video on the route they asked about
Who reviews budget mechanical keyboards with proper sound tests? How a fair sound test is set up, then the reviewers who do it that way
Is there a channel with full repair walkthroughs for older Toyotas? The walkthrough for their model and job, not a link to a channel home page

People ask for a channel but are helped by a single video, and the best replies name more than one creator. Our guide on finding the subreddits where your buyers ask covers the searches that turn up these threads; for a channel, swap the product category for your topic.

The advice to post as a fan, and why to skip it

A promotion guide updated in February 2026, suggests answering recommendation threads by suggesting your own channel as if you were a subscriber. It works until someone checks your profile. K6's write-up lists what a promotion gone wrong can cost on Reddit: removed posts, bans, a spam label on the account, and screenshots and callouts that travel beyond the thread.

It also runs against the rules. Reddit's site-wide rules ask you to take part authentically, not to spam, and not to mislead people about who you are. In the US, the FTC's Endorsement Guides FAQ says a creator promoting their own brand should disclose it whenever it is not clear the brand is theirs, and in related answers it says a note on your profile page is not enough. Recommending your own channel in a stranger's thread is usually that case. The rule behind it is 16 CFR 255.5; other places have their own, see EU disclosure rules for brand posts.

How to recommend your own video in a thread

  1. Read the subreddit's rules first
Many communities ban self-promotion, and the rules differ from one to the next. If links to your own videos are banned, answer without one or move on. More in Reddit self-promotion rules.
  2. Answer in the comment itself
Write the answer as if the video did not exist. Someone who never clicks should still be helped.
  3. Link one video, not the channel
Pick the video that answers this exact question, with a timestamp if the answer sits in the middle.
  4. Say it is yours, before the link
One short line in the same comment. A profile bio or a later reply does not count.
  5. Name other creators where they fit
If a bigger channel covers it better, say so. It makes your own suggestion easier to trust.
  6. Come back for the follow-ups
Questions under your reply are where a viewer decides whether to subscribe. Answer them.

What to measure in YouTube Studio

A good thread can send a burst of clicks. Clicks alone tell you little; these reports show whether the right people arrived.

Where to look and what it tells you
ReportWhat it showsWhat to look for
Reach tab, external sites or apps cardThe sites and apps that sent viewers to a videoWhether Reddit appears, and for which videos
Audience tab: new, casual and regular viewersCasual viewers watched at least once a month for one to five months of the past year; regular viewers for more than sixWhether new viewers show up later as casual ones
SubscribersPeople who subscribed to the channelWhether the videos you linked gain subscribers, not only views

The definitions come from YouTube's help pages on video reach and your audience. Compare a few weeks with threads against a few weeks without; one good thread is not a trend.

YouTube comments as a second place to answer

The same questions turn up under other people's videos. YouTube's Spam Policy accepts that creators promote their channels; among what it bans are high-volume, repetitive or deceptive comments, such as one “check out my channel” line pasted under hundreds of videos. Channel owners can also hold comments with links for review, and the fake engagement policy warns that a promoter you hire can put your channel at risk. Details in YouTube comments for brands.

Where Agent Agency fits for a channel

The slow part is reading: dozens of topic communities, most threads not about anything you have filmed. Agent Agency is built mainly for companies. It starts from a link to what you promote, reads up to five public pages there and writes a Product DNA from them; if your channel has its own website, start from that. A discovery run then looks for the communities where your topic comes up.

Questions

Is it against Reddit's rules to share my own YouTube video?

Not as such. Reddit's site-wide rules ask you to follow each community's rules, take part authentically and not spam. Its spam help page asks people whose posts are mostly links to something they run to watch how often they post, and says moderators decide what counts as spam. Read each community's rules first; if links are banned, answer without one.

Do I have to say it is my channel when I recommend it?

If the comment does not make it clear, you should. Reddit's rules ban intentionally misleading people about who you are, and the FTC's guidance for US audiences says creators promoting their own brand should disclose it when that is not clear. Its related answers say a note on your profile page is not enough.

Do sub-for-sub and channel promo subreddits help a small channel?

They bring clicks from other creators, who rarely come back to watch. YouTube's Spam Policy treats coordinated sub-for-sub schemes and rewards for subscribers as engagement manipulation, so trading subscriptions puts the channel at risk as well as wasting your time.
