Promoting an Etsy Shop on Reddit, for Makers and Sellers

Promoting an Etsy shop on Reddit works best in buyer threads, not promo subreddits. Promo communities such as r/etsypromos are full of other sellers posting their shops. Buyers ask for gifts and handmade pieces in hobby and gift threads, often with a budget and a deadline. Answer the request first, say the shop is yours, mention it only when it fits, and follow each subreddit's rules.

Promo subreddits are mostly sellers talking to sellers

This page is for makers, vintage dealers and digital sellers whose storefront is an Etsy shop. If you sell from your own store, the page for ecommerce brands fits better.

The Etsy communities on Reddit are useful, but for a different job than selling. Third-party snapshots of r/EtsySellers and r/EtsyHelp show seller talk: shop critiques, shipping costs, whether ads pay, and shops with views but no sales. r/etsypromos describes itself as a place for sellers to promote their shops, and the snapshot shows mostly launch posts and sellers asking why they have no sales.

When Etsy put its Teams and Forums into read-only mode for a period, the ART Team announced on Etsy's community site that its daily promo games had moved to a subreddit, r/TheARTteam. Games like that are good for company and feedback. Do not plan sales around them: the people reading run shops too.

Where buyers actually ask

Buyers turn up in communities about the thing they want or the person they are buying for: knitting, tabletop games, weddings, pets, a city's local sub before the holidays. The requests worth answering are specific. Examples of the kind we mean:

  • A handmade wedding gift for a couple who love hiking, under a set budget.
  • A custom pet portrait that does not look AI-generated.
  • A personalised cutting board that ships to Canada before December.
  • Minimal printable planner pages, not pastel ones.
  • How to tell if vintage silver jewellery bought online is real.

Our guide on finding the subreddits where buyers ask covers the searches. For a maker the filter is simple: does the thread ask for something you make, at a price you sell, to a place you ship?

The shop facts that decide whether you can answer

Matching a request to your shop
The request saysThe shop fact to check
Under a budgetYour price, including personalisation
Before a dateProcessing time plus transit to that region
Ships to a countryYour shipping profile covers it
Made from my drawing or photoYou take custom orders and the listing says so
Handmade, not mass-producedHow the item is made, and whether a production partner is involved

If one check fails, skip the thread or answer without the shop. Recommending a listing that cannot arrive in time costs more goodwill than silence.

Answer the handmade question honestly

Buyers often ask whether a listing is really handmade. Etsy's Creativity Standards give you the words for an honest answer: items are made, designed, handpicked or sourced by a seller. Sellers who use a production partner have to disclose it, items made with AI tools have to say so in the description, and vintage means at least 20 years old.

If your prints are your designs printed by a partner, say so before anyone asks. If someone asks how to spot resold mass-produced items, a useful answer with no mention of your shop does more for your name than a link.

A reply that answers first

The advice works for any shop, the disclosure sits next to the mention, and the deadline is stated. How to write a Reddit comment that is not spam has more patterns, and disclosure templates has wording to adapt.

The rules that apply

  • Reddit. The Reddit Rules ask you to follow each community's rules, take part authentically, not spam, and not mislead people about who you are. Subreddits add their own limits; see Reddit's self-promotion rules.
  • Advertising law. The FTC's Endorsement Guides say a connection to the seller that readers would not expect, and that could change how much weight they give a recommendation, must be disclosed clearly. Being the seller is as close a connection as there is. Its guidance for creators says to put it with the recommendation in plain words, and that US law can apply to posts made from abroad when they are likely to affect US shoppers. Other countries have their own rules; see EU disclosure rules.

A comment that is only a shop link answers nothing, and moderators tend to treat it as spam. You choose how to word a disclosure; the platform's rules and the law decide that you need one.

Gift threads run on deadlines

  1. Before the season
Write down your last order date for each region, from your processing time and your carrier's holiday cutoffs.
  2. During the season
Answer gift requests only while you can still deliver to the asker's region, and put the order-by date in the reply.
  3. After your cutoff
Stop recommending the shop for that holiday. Answer with general advice, or a digital item if you sell one.

How to tell whether it worked

A seller guide updated in May 2025 describes a How Shoppers Found You section in Etsy's Stats that splits visits into traffic Etsy brought and traffic you brought. Its social media examples are Pinterest, Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, and Reddit is not named, so look for Reddit visits under social media and under direct and other traffic, which the guide says you can open to see the sending website.

Etsy's Share & Save program gives you a trackable shop link, and an Etsy post from about three years ago says sales through that link earn a credit on fees; check Shop Manager for current terms. Keep a short log of each reply and look at orders and messages in the days after it.

Where an agent fits, and where it does not

The slow part is reading hobby and gift threads, most of them not for you. You can join Agent Agency with an Etsy shop link. It drafts a Product DNA that you correct and approve before any agent uses it. A shop page is harder to read than a plain website, so check that the DNA has your materials, personalisation options, processing time and shipping regions right, because those decide which requests are answerable.

The agent reads each community's rules before it writes, keeps to daily limits and quiet hours, and brings up your shop only when it answers the question, under a daily cap and with no bare links. In Approve mode every reply waits for your OK, which is when you check the date against your cutoff. How a reply discloses your connection is your call and your responsibility. See how it works.

Questions

Can I post my Etsy shop link on Reddit?

Reddit's site-wide rules say nothing about shop links as such. They ask you to follow each community's rules, take part authentically and not spam, and each subreddit sets its own limits. A bare link reads as spam almost anywhere. Answer the question, say the shop is yours, and link only where the community allows it.

Are Etsy promo subreddits worth the time?

For company and feedback, often yes. For orders, expect little: the posts in communities like r/etsypromos come mostly from other sellers. Answering specific gift and hobby requests is more likely to reach someone ready to order.

Do Reddit replies help my Etsy search ranking?

We found no Etsy source that says so, and we do not claim it. Treat Reddit as a source of visits you bring yourself, and watch your Stats traffic sources and orders after a reply rather than your position in Etsy search.

Does Agent Agency work with an Etsy shop instead of a website?

You can join with an Etsy shop link. A shop page is harder to read than a plain website, so expect to correct the Product DNA before you approve it, especially processing time and shipping regions, since those decide which gift requests to leave alone.
