How to Get Recommended by ChatGPT From Reddit: What Is Known and What Isn't
Nobody outside OpenAI can make ChatGPT recommend a product, and OpenAI has not published how it picks one. What is documented: OpenAI has access to Reddit's Data API, and ChatGPT search can show public web pages. What you control is the thread: answer real buyer questions with specific, first-hand detail, say that you make the product, follow each subreddit's rules, and measure with repeated prompts, not one screenshot.

The short answer
There is no published way to submit your product into ChatGPT's recommendations, and nobody outside OpenAI knows how it chooses one product over another. What is on the record is narrower: under a 2024 partnership OpenAI has access to Reddit's Data API, and ChatGPT search can surface public web pages. The realistic goal is to leave useful, honest answers where buyers ask, knowing you cannot control whether an assistant repeats them.
This guide covers the Reddit path step by step. For your own website, see how to get your brand mentioned in AI answers. For why the 'Reddit is ChatGPT's top source' figures disagree with each other, see Reddit in AI answers: why citation studies disagree.
Three ways Reddit content can reach ChatGPT
| Route | What is documented | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Licensed data access | On 16 May 2024, Reddit and OpenAI announced that OpenAI would use Reddit's Data API, which supplies real-time, structured content, to bring Reddit content to ChatGPT. | ChatGPT has a sanctioned route to recent threads. Nothing was said about how that affects which products get named. |
| Live search | OAI-SearchBot surfaces websites in ChatGPT search, and sites that block it are not shown in search answers. ChatGPT-User may visit a page when a user asks ChatGPT a question. | An answer may draw on recent pages, so a comment in a thread that matches the question has a chance to be read. Nothing tells you when or whether that happens. |
| Model training | GPTBot collects content that may be used to train OpenAI's models. Each crawler setting is independent of the others. | Slow and invisible. Nobody can tell you whether a given comment was used or what weight it carried. |
Google has a similar deal. On 22 February 2024 it announced access to Reddit's Data API and said this does not change its use of publicly available, crawlable content for indexing, training or display.
What OpenAI and Reddit have said, and what they haven't
- OpenAI and Reddit, May 2024. OpenAI gets Reddit's Data API, Reddit builds AI features on OpenAI's models, and OpenAI would become a Reddit advertising partner (the announcement, archived copy).
- OpenAI's crawler documentation. Search (OAI-SearchBot) and training (GPTBot) have independent robots.txt settings, search-related robots.txt changes can take about 24 hours to apply, and user-triggered visits by ChatGPT-User may not follow robots.txt rules (Overview of OpenAI crawlers).
- Reddit's API in 2027. TechCrunch reported on 30 September 2026 that Reddit will end public API access in March 2027, after which AI assistants would need a commercial deal for Reddit data (TechCrunch). Our note on the Reddit public API shutdown has the dates.
What nobody has published: whether a thread's score, the poster's karma, account age or subreddit size affect which thread an assistant reads, and how ChatGPT chooses between two products that both fit a question. Guides that state a formula for this are guessing.
What a Reddit answer worth repeating looks like
We have no data on which comments ChatGPT repeats, and we have not found a public study that measures it for Reddit comments. What follows is reasoning, not a finding: an assistant reading a thread can only reuse what the text says plainly. 'Check out our tool' gives it nothing. What the product does, for whom, and where it falls short gives it a sentence it can use.
- Name the category and the product in words. 'Uptime monitoring for small teams' is something a reader and a model can match to a question. A bare link is not.
- Say who it is for and who it is not for. A stated limit makes the rest of the answer more believable and lets the asker rule you out fast when it does not fit.
- Give first-hand detail. What you tried, what broke, what the setup involved. Specifics are what separate an answer from an ad.
- Name real alternatives. Recommendation threads ask for options. An answer that lists two or three, including yours, reads as help.
- Disclose in the same comment. Put 'I work on X' next to the mention, not only in your profile. Our disclosure templates have wording for founders, staff and agencies.
- Pick threads that match real questions. A good comment in a thread nobody searches for does little. Our guide to answering 'what tool do you use?' threads covers how to find and answer them.
| Reply | What an assistant could reuse |
|---|---|
| “Check out our tool, link in my profile!” | Nothing. No category, no use case, no comparison, no stated connection. In a subreddit that limits self-promotion it may also be removed. |
| “For a five-person team I'd start with Uptime Kuma if you want simple and self-hosted. Disclosure: I work on Acme Notes, which only pages you about what's about to break. It's more than you need if up/down checks are enough.” | A category, two named options, who each one fits, a stated limit and a clear connection in the same comment. |
What gets you removed before any AI reads it
Every route above starts with a comment that is still up. Reddit's rules decide that first, and they are explicit about the shortcuts people try for AI visibility.
- Spam. Reddit's spam policy names a bot that keeps promoting products in one or many communities as a violation, and lists using bots or generative AI tools to spread spam (Reddit Help: Spam, archived copy). Repeating the same mention across subreddits to sway AI answers fits that description.
- AI text posing as human. Reddit's Manipulated Content policy allows AI-generated content where a community's rules permit it, but prohibits AI content that presents itself as human-generated, and asks posters to tag or otherwise indicate AI content (Reddit Help, archived copy).
- Misleading identity. Rule 5 of the Reddit Rules says not to intentionally mislead others or impersonate anyone deceptively. Accounts that pose as unrelated people backing each other up mislead readers about who is speaking.
- Ignoring the community. Rule 2 asks people to follow each community's rules and take part where they have a personal interest. Read a subreddit's self-promotion rules before the first comment.
A four-week plan that survives moderation
- Week 1: write down the prompts
List 10 to 20 questions a buyer would type into ChatGPT, such as 'best uptime monitor for a small team'. Run each one several times in fresh, logged-out sessions and note which products and which sources come up. That is your baseline. - Week 1: find the matching threads
Search Reddit and Google for threads asking the same questions. Note the subreddit, its rule on vendors and promotion, and whether the thread still accepts replies. - Week 2: answer without your product
Reply to questions where you know the topic, with no product and no link. This shows the community, and you, whether your answers help. Our guide to writing a Reddit comment that is not spam has examples. - Week 3: answer recommendation threads
Where your product fits the question and the subreddit allows it, mention it with the disclosure in the same comment and next to real alternatives. Skip threads where it does not fit. - Week 4: run the prompts again
Repeat the week 1 prompts the same way and compare. Expect little or no change this soon. Nobody controls whether or when an assistant reads a given thread. Keep answering and measure again each month.
How to check whether it is working
One screenshot proves nothing. ChatGPT's answers vary from run to run, so measure a rate, not a single result.
- Use the same prompt list every time, written the way buyers ask.
- Run each prompt in a fresh, logged-out session so earlier chats do not shape the answer.
- Run problem prompts ('how do I monitor ten servers cheaply') at least 3 times and brand prompts ('is Acme Notes good for small teams') at least 5 times.
- Record whether your product is named, whether a Reddit thread is cited, and which thread.
- Report each result with its sample size, for example 'named in 2 of 5 runs', and compare like with like from month to month.
This is the method in our own measurement runbook. We have no results to publish yet, so this page makes no claim about what Reddit activity does to ChatGPT recommendations. If you also want your own site to be readable by the search crawlers, check which AI crawlers your robots.txt allows.
Where Agent Agency fits
Agent Agency runs AI agents that take part in those conversations for your brand, starting with Reddit. The agents read first, then answer questions. No bare links, no copy-paste replies, and product mentions only when they answer the question, under a daily cap. A daily report shows what they skipped, and why. See how it works.
It does not control what ChatGPT recommends. The replies are written by AI, so Reddit's expectation that AI content is tagged, and each subreddit's rules, apply to them. How each reply discloses is the operator's decision.
What this approach cannot do
- It cannot make ChatGPT name you. No one outside OpenAI controls that.
- It cannot rescue a weak product. If people in the thread disagree with you, an assistant reads their replies too.
- It may not last in its current form. Which AI products can read Reddit depends on data deals and API rules that change in 2027.
- It does not replace your own site. Assistants also read official pages, so state your product facts there as plainly as you do in a thread.
Questions
Does a thread's score or the poster's karma decide which threads ChatGPT uses?
Nobody outside OpenAI knows. Neither the 2024 Reddit and OpenAI announcement nor OpenAI's crawler documentation mentions scores, karma, account age or subreddit size. Any guide that gives you a threshold is guessing, and buying engagement to reach one breaks Reddit's rules on spam and misleading behavior.
Can I use AI to write my Reddit answers?
Reddit's Manipulated Content policy allows AI-generated content where a community's rules permit it, but not AI content that presents itself as human-written, and it asks posters to tag AI content. Many subreddits set stricter rules, so check each one. Disclosing your connection to the product is a separate requirement.
Does the GEO research apply to Reddit comments?
Not directly. The GEO paper by Aggarwal and colleagues, accepted to KDD 2024, reported that its methods raised source visibility in generative engine answers by up to 40%, with results that varied by domain. It tested web sources on its own benchmark, not Reddit comments, so its numbers are no forecast for a thread.
