How to Check if You're Shadowbanned on Reddit, Reliably
Check for a Reddit shadowban the careful way: a logged-out profile check, a second check a minute later, a control account, and what Reddit Help says to do.
Published · Updated
To check if you're shadowbanned on Reddit, open your profile in a logged-out browser window. If Reddit can't find it, wait a minute and look again, then open a profile you know is live, such as u/reddit, in the same window. Only two misses for your account plus a working control account count as a real signal. Anything less is a guess.
What Reddit calls a shadowban
"Shadowban" is a user term. As of 2026-10-16 it does not appear in the Reddit Rules, the User Agreement or the three Reddit Help articles we read for this guide. The closest official description is the Help article on accounts flagged for spam:
“If your posts, comments, chat messages, and profile page aren’t showing up as expected, your account might’ve been flagged for spam or inauthentic activity.”
Reddit Help: My account was flagged for spam or inauthentic activity
That sits inside a wider set of tools. The Reddit Rules list enforcement options that include temporary or permanent suspension and “Removal of privileges from, or adding restrictions to, accounts”. Reddit's page on content moderation, enforcement and appeals describes a possible ladder of a warning, then a 3-day ban, a 7-day ban and a permanent ban, while noting that some violations lead straight to a permanent ban.
So when people say "shadowban", they usually mean something like the flagged state above: you can still log in, but your posts and profile don't show up for other people as expected.
A quick check you can do by hand
Checking while logged in tells you nothing, because the question is what other people see. So check from outside:
- Open a private or incognito window, so you are not logged in.
- Go to reddit.com/user/ followed by your exact username.
- If your profile and recent posts show up, your profile is not hidden from logged-out visitors.
- If Reddit says it can't find the user, don't conclude anything yet. Go on to the steps below.
The same idea works through Reddit's API. The API documentation lists GET /user/username/about, which returns information about a user, including karma. In our own code we read that endpoint without logging in and treat an HTTP 404 as "hidden from outside" and an HTTP 200 as "visible". None of the Reddit pages we read say a flagged account answers 404, so treat it as an observed signal, not an official rule.
The reliable version: two misses and a control
A single 404 proves very little. A network hiccup, a broken token or a Reddit-wide incident can all produce one. That is why the checker we wrote only calls an account hidden when three things hold:
- The account's profile returns 404.
- A second read, at least 60 seconds after the first, returns 404 again.
- Right after the second read, the same logged-out reader gets a 200 for a control account. We use u/reddit.
The control is the important part. If the control account also fails, the problem is most likely the reader or Reddit, not your account. Two misses with a working control is the only combination our code treats as confirmed.
The code also sorts the other outcomes. A 200 means clear. A 200 that marks the account as suspended means suspended, which is a different and more visible state. Everything else is unknown.
Unknown means do nothing
Our checker returns "unknown" when there is a network error, a 5xx server error, a 429 (too many requests), a login or token error, or when the control account fails too. The rule attached to that result is simple: callers must not act on it. No pausing the account, no deleting posts, no new account.
Do the same by hand. If you can't get a clean answer, wait and run the full check again later. Acting on a guess is how people delete good posts or abandon accounts that were never restricted.
False positives and false negatives
Things that look like a shadowban but are not:
- A typo in the username. The API documentation describes the about endpoint for "an existing user".
- A temporary outage or rate limit, which the second read and the control account are there to catch.
- A post removed by one subreddit's moderators. Moderators enforce their own community's rules, which is separate from an account-level action by Reddit.
And one thing that looks fine but may not be. Reddit Help says this about temporary bans:
“If you’ve been temporarily banned, your profile won’t change and other redditors who view your profile won’t know that you’ve been banned.”
Reddit Help: My account was banned for spam, inauthentic activity, or ban evasion
So a profile that loads from outside does not rule out every restriction. The same page says a permanent ban adds a message to the profile, and that banned accounts get reminders when they try to post or comment. Check your inbox as well as your profile.
If the check says your account is hidden
Reddit Help gives the official route if you think your account was flagged by mistake: log in to the affected account in a browser, go to the appeals page, and submit the form. For enforcement notices, Reddit says:
“Users may submit an appeal within six months of receiving the notification.”

Don't open a second account to get around a restriction; ban evasion is one of the reasons Reddit lists for bans. And if you automate checks across many accounts, do it within Reddit's terms. The User Agreement (effective July 1, 2026) says “scraping the Services without Reddit’s prior written consent is prohibited”.
