Why New Reddit Accounts' Comments Vanish (and How to Check)

Comments from a new Reddit account can be hidden by the spam filter, AutoModerator gates or Crowd Control. Here is how to check while logged out.

Published · Updated

If your comments from a new Reddit account are not showing, the usual causes are Reddit's spam filter, a community's AutoModerator rules that hold back comments from new or low-karma accounts, or Crowd Control. In each case the comment can be hidden from other people in the thread. The only reliable test is to open the comment while logged out, and to do it more than once, because a held comment can still be approved later. Everything below about Reddit's behaviour is from Reddit's own help pages and policies as of 2026-10-16.

Why a new account's comment can disappear

Reddit's help centre names several separate mechanisms. They overlap, so a comment can be caught by more than one:

  • Reddit's spam filter, which brand-new accounts without much karma may hit.
  • AutoModerator rules that each community writes for itself, often based on karma and account age.
  • Crowd Control, a moderator setting that collapses or holds comments from people who are not yet trusted in that community.
  • A moderator removing the comment by hand for breaking a community rule.
  • An account-level flag for spam or inauthentic activity.

A removed comment does not always leave an obvious gap. Reddit's page on missing comments says that when a comment is removed,

“the comment is hidden so that people in the thread can’t see it but the comment count stays the same.”

So the comment counter on a thread tells you nothing about whether your own comment is public.

Reddit's spam filter and new accounts

Reddit limits how often people can post and comment in a community. On Why can't I see my post? it says:

“If you’re brand new to Reddit and don’t have a lot of karma yet, you may be hitting this spam filter.”

The same page adds that being new to a community that is especially sensitive to spam can trigger it too, and that earning a small amount of karma by commenting on other posts in that community can help. Reddit's page on the "You're doing that too much" message says Reddit Premium does not affect the spam filter.

AutoModerator karma and account-age gates

AutoModerator is configured separately in each community. The AutoModerator documentation lists the checks moderators can use, including comment karma, post karma, combined karma, karma inside that community and account age (which can be set in minutes, hours, days, weeks, months or years). One of its actions removes an item but keeps it for moderators to review:

“filter is a unique action to automoderator, and will remove the post but keep it in the modqueue and unmoderated pages.”

Moderators can also filter by Reddit's Contributor Quality Score, which places every account in one of five tiers. Reddit's own example rules apply it to comments as well as posts. Reddit says the score draws on signals that include past actions on the account and steps such as email verification.

Do not expect to find the exact numbers. The Poster Eligibility Guide page says:

“Specific karma and account age thresholds used by communities aren’t disclosed at this time to deter potential misuse.”

That guide only covers posting. When you press Create a post, it tells you which karma, account-age and account verification criteria you meet. Reddit's help pages describe no equivalent screen for comments, so the community's sidebar rules and its moderators are your best sources.

Crowd Control: collapsed or held for review

Crowd Control lets moderators collapse or filter comments from people who aren't yet trusted members of the community. The comment settings have three levels:

  • Moderate: filters accounts with negative community karma.
  • High: adds new accounts.
  • Maximum: adds people who have not joined the community.

Moderators can also choose to hold these comments in the mod queue, where they stay invisible until a moderator approves or removes them. Approved users are not caught by Crowd Control. On the mod queue side, approving an item makes it visible again if it was automatically removed as spam or filtered.

How to check whether your comment is visible

You can do this check yourself in a minute:

  1. Open your comment and copy its link (Share, then Copy link).
  2. Open a private or incognito browser window where you are not logged in to Reddit.
  3. Paste the link. If you can see your comment with your username and text, it is public right now.
  4. If the comment is missing, or shows without your username or text, assume it is not public. Wait and check again after about an hour and again a few hours later, because a held comment can still be approved.

Two shortcuts give misleading answers:

  • The thread's comment count, for the reason quoted above.
  • Asking one friend to look while logged in. According to Reddit's blocking page, people you have blocked see your comments in communities as if they were deleted, so one person's view may not match what others see.

If every comment from the account is missing, look at the profile page from the logged-out window too. Reddit's page on flagged accounts says:

“If your posts, comments, chat messages, and profile page aren’t showing up as expected, your account might’ve been flagged for spam or inauthentic activity.”

How we check: several logged-out reads over six hours

We run the same logged-out test in our own code, with timing added, because one read straight after posting was not reliable for us. Comments that looked missing at first were often public a little later. The schedule:

  1. Three anonymous reads of the comment by its ID: when it is posted, about 20 seconds later and about 90 seconds later.
  2. If any read shows the comment under the posting account's name, it is marked visible and we stop.
  3. If at least two reads find nothing, or a copy without the account's name, it is marked suspect rather than hidden.
  4. A suspect comment is read again 10 minutes, 1 hour and 6 hours after posting. If it shows up, it is marked as late visible. Only a comment that is still missing at the 6-hour check is marked confirmed hidden.
  5. An HTTP 403 or a network error counts as unknown, never as hidden, because a blocked anonymous request says nothing about the comment itself.

We treat a confirmed hidden comment as a reason to stop commenting in that community and look at its rules, not as a reason to post again.

What to do if it stays hidden

  • Reread the community's rules in the sidebar. A moderator may have removed the comment for breaking one.
  • If you think it was removed by mistake, send the moderators a modmail message, as Reddit suggests on Why can't I see my post?
  • If nothing from the account is visible anywhere, use Reddit's appeal form, linked from the flagged account page.
  • Take part in the community in ordinary ways and let the account build karma at its normal pace.

Do not try to get around the filters by deceiving people. The Reddit Rules ask you to

“Participate authentically in communities where you have a personal interest, and do not spam or engage in disruptive behaviors (including content manipulation)”

Buying an older account is not a way around the gates either. The User Agreement says: “You will not license, sell, or transfer your Account without our prior written approval.”
