# Reddit vs Quora vs X for Brands: Where Your Answers Belong

> Answer on Reddit when the community's rules allow it and you say who you work for. Answer on Quora when the question needs a full explanation, with your affiliation in the answer and no affiliate links. Answer on X when the conversation is already live, from an authentic account. On all three, posing as an unconnected customer breaks the platform's rules and UK, EU and US consumer protection rules.

## The three platforms side by side

A small team usually has time to answer buyer questions in one or two places. The choice turns less on audience size than on rules: who decides whether you may mention your product, how you must say you work on it, and what happens to a link. The table sums up each platform's own pages; the sections below give the detail and the source.

**Promotion rules for brand answers on Reddit, Quora and X**

| Question | Reddit | Quora | X |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Who decides if you may mention your product | Each community's own rules, on top of the sitewide Reddit Rules | Quora's answer and spam policies | X's sitewide rules, including the Authenticity policy |
| How to show your affiliation | Do not hide it: misrepresenting your affiliation to mislead breaks the Impersonation policy | An answer about your own product should make the affiliation clear | No fake personas or misleading profiles; paid partnerships need X's Paid Partnership label, and in the UK own-brand posts need a disclosure |
| Links | Set by each community; read the sidebar and the wiki | A link has to work as a source, with a summary in the answer; affiliate links count as spam | Aggressive or automated engagement to push traffic to a product is not allowed; a post with an affiliate link counts as a paid partnership |
| Automation | No separate automation rule on the Reddit Rules page; Rule 2 bans spam and content manipulation | Not covered by the Quora document we could open | Automated accounts must follow X's Developer Policy, and you answer for apps you authorize |
| Where it fits best | Threads where people compare tools and ask what worked for others | Evergreen how-to and which-one-should-I-choose questions | Live arguments about your category, often in the replies |

## Reddit: the community decides, your affiliation stays visible

Reddit has two layers of rules. The sitewide [Reddit Rules](https://redditinc.com/policies/reddit-rules) apply everywhere: Rule 2 asks you to follow each community's rules, to take part where you have a real personal interest, and not to spam or manipulate content. Rule 5 says you do not need to use your real name, but you may not intentionally mislead people or impersonate a person or an organization in a deceptive way. Then each subreddit adds its own rules, and those are the ones that decide whether a product mention is allowed at all.

Reddit's [Impersonation policy](https://web.archive.org/web/20260906003745/https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/360043075032-Impersonation) (updated 19 May 2026 in the archived copy we read) spells out the part brands trip over: you may stay anonymous, but you may not misrepresent your identity or your affiliation to mislead others. Working on the product you recommend is an affiliation. A handle that does not name the company is fine; a comment that presents you as an unconnected user is not.

- **Read the sidebar and the wiki first.** Check whether promotion is allowed at all, only in a set thread, or with a limit on how often you link your own work.
- **Say it in the comment.** One short line near the product mention, such as "I work on this, so I'm biased." Our [disclosure templates](https://agentagency.si/guides/reddit-disclosure-templates) have wording for comments, posts and DMs.
- **Answer without the product first.** If the comment is still useful with the product line removed, it belongs in the thread.
- **Pick the right account.** A brand account speaks for the company; a founder account speaks from experience. See [brand account or founder account](https://agentagency.si/guides/brand-account-or-founder-account) for when to use which.

## Quora: explain in the answer, link only as a source

Quora is built around a question page meant to stay useful for the next person with the same question. Quora's [Promoted Answers best-practices guide](https://go.quoraforbusiness.com/rs/384-CMP-465/images/Promoted_Answers_Best_Practices.pdf) says so and lists tips to keep answers from being marked as spam. The guide is undated and written for paid answers, but it states its spam definition as Quora's own, so it is a fair guide for organic brand answers too.

- **Disclose in the answer.** The guide says that an answer about the writer's own company or product should make that affiliation clear.
- **Answer the question that was asked.** It warns against misreading the question, answering a different one, or promoting a product in a way that does not help.
- **Give advice that works for more than one reader.** The guide prefers answers that cover several cases with conditions, in the form "if you need this, choose that".
- **Treat links as sources.** A link dropped into the middle of an answer that leads to a company site, and is not presented as a source, can be marked as spam. An answer that points to an outside page should summarize how that page answers the question, so the answer makes sense on Quora alone.
- **No affiliate links.** The guide says they are not allowed and that content using them is treated as spam.

> **Note:** Quora's Help Center pages refused our requests when we checked on 22 October 2026, so this section rests on the business PDF alone. Read Quora's current answering and spam policies in its Help Center before you post.

## X: an authentic account, and you answer for your tools

Most brand replies on X happen on the open timeline, so X's sitewide rules carry the weight. Its [Authenticity policy](https://web.archive.org/web/20261014145300/https://help.x.com/en/rules-and-policies/authenticity) (marked April 2025 in the archived copy) requires accounts to be authentic. It lists accounts for your own business and brand accounts for different regions or languages as allowed. It does not allow fake personas, including stock, stolen or AI-generated profile photos used to deceive, and it does not allow engaging with posts aggressively or through automation to drive traffic to products or websites. Sending bulk, aggressive, high-volume unsolicited replies counts as content spam.

Two lines matter for any team using software to reply. Automated or scripted accounts that do not follow X's Developer Policy count as unauthorized automation, and you are responsible for third-party apps you allow to use your account. Our [X automation rules](https://agentagency.si/guides/x-automation-rules) guide covers the developer side.

X's [Paid Partnerships policy](https://web.archive.org/web/20261014105337/https://help.x.com/en/rules-and-policies/paid-partnerships-policy) (archived copy of 14 October 2026) covers posts where a brand gifts you a product, pays you, gives you a commission through affiliate links or discount codes, or has a commercial agreement with you, such as an ambassador role. Such a post, published as an ordinary post, needs the Paid Partnership disclosure switched on in the post's Content Disclosure settings, and X then labels it. The policy's UK section goes further: posts with commercial intent, including own-brand posts by someone with a commercial interest in the brand such as a director, need a disclosure. Some categories, such as alcohol, supplements and weight-loss products, cannot be promoted as paid partnerships at all.

## Which questions belong where

Match the kind of question to the platform. This is our editorial view, not a platform rule.

**Matching the question to the platform**

| Kind of question | Where to answer | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Which tool should I use for this, asked today | Reddit thread or X reply | The asker is still reading, and others in the thread are comparing options |
| How do I do this, asked again and again | Quora | The question page is meant to stay the best answer for later readers, so a full explanation keeps paying off |
| A complaint about your product | Where it was posted, from the brand account | Moving it elsewhere looks like avoidance; see [handling a negative thread](https://agentagency.si/guides/negative-reddit-thread-about-your-product) |
| Your product compared with another | Reddit, if the community allows it, with your affiliation stated | Readers expect people with first-hand use to weigh in, and they expect to know who is biased |
| A launch or a new feature | Your own X account | It is your timeline, not an answer to someone else's question |

## One answer, written three ways

Pasting one text on all three fails everywhere: an essay reads as marketing on Reddit, a one-liner says nothing on Quora, and a wall of text is hard to read in a fast X thread. Example: someone asks how to send invoices straight from a spreadsheet, and you work on an invoicing tool.

1. **Reddit comment** Lead with the method that works without your product, in a few sentences. Then one line: "Disclosure: I work on an invoicing tool that does this for you." Add the link only if the community's rules allow it, and only once.
2. **Quora answer** Write the full answer with conditions: if you send a handful of invoices a month, a spreadsheet template is enough; if you send many, a tool saves time. Say plainly that you work on one of those tools. Any link is a source with a sentence that says what it shows.
3. **X reply** One or two sentences with the useful part, plus "I work on one of these" in the same reply. Reply to the person who asked, not to every post that mentions invoices.

## The law applies on every platform

Platform rules differ, but consumer law does not care which site you post on. In the UK, the [Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024](https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2024/13/schedule/20), Schedule 20 paragraph 25, in force since 6 April 2025, bans falsely claiming or creating the impression that a trader is not acting for business purposes, and falsely presenting yourself as a consumer. The EU's [Unfair Commercial Practices Directive](https://www.legislation.gov.uk/eudr/2005/29/annex/I) has the same ban in point 22 of Annex I, its list of practices that are unfair in all circumstances.

The EU's [Digital Services Act, Article 26(2)](https://www.eu-digital-services-act.com/Digital_Services_Act_Article_26.html) also requires online platforms to give users a way to declare that their content is or contains commercial communication, and then to make that clear to other users in real time. If the platform you post on offers such a declaration, use it. In the US, the FTC's Endorsement Guides, [16 CFR 255.5](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-16/chapter-I/subchapter-B/part-255/section-255.5), require a connection between an endorser and the seller to be disclosed clearly and conspicuously when it could change how much weight people give the endorsement and the audience would not expect it. A business relationship can be such a connection. One of the rule's own examples is an employee promoting the employer's new product on an online discussion board without saying so: the employee should disclose the relationship.

> **Warning:** This is not legal advice. The wording of a disclosure is the operator's decision, but the platform's rules and the law require disclosing a material connection. Our guide to [EU disclosure rules for brand posts](https://agentagency.si/guides/eu-disclosure-rules-for-brand-posts) goes further on the EU side.

## Choosing by AI search citations

Some teams pick a platform by how often AI assistants cite it. The published share figures come from vendor studies that counted different things and do not agree, so we do not rank the three platforms by them here. Our post on [Reddit in AI answers](https://agentagency.si/blog/reddit-ai-search-citations) compares those studies.

## Where Agent Agency fits

Agent Agency runs agents on Reddit and X today; YouTube is in testing, and Quora is on the [platform list](https://agentagency.si/platforms) as planned with no date yet. So Quora answers are yours to write by hand for now. How a disclosure is worded is your decision as the operator; the platform's rules and the law require that a material connection is disclosed.

## Questions

### Is Quora or Reddit better for brand answers?

Neither is better in general. Reddit suits live questions where people compare tools, as long as the community allows product mentions. Quora suits questions that keep being asked, because the question page is meant to stay useful to later readers. Pick by the kind of question you want to answer, not by the platform.

### Do I have to disclose that I work on the product in every answer?

When you recommend or discuss your own product, yes, and the safest place is the answer itself. Reddit bars misrepresenting your affiliation to mislead, Quora's business guide says the affiliation should be clear, UK and EU consumer law bans falsely presenting yourself as a consumer, and the US FTC guides call for disclosing a material connection such as working for the seller.

### Can I put links to my product in Quora answers?

Quora's business guide treats a link as acceptable when it is presented as a source and the answer summarizes what it shows. A random link to a company site can be marked as spam, and affiliate links are not allowed at all. Check Quora's current Help Center policies too.
