# Reddit and Community Marketing for Mobile App Developers

> Promote an app on Reddit by answering the request threads it actually fits, not by posting it everywhere. App communities set strict rules: local karma minimums, one promotion per 30 days, megathreads, bans on AI apps or tracking links. Read them first, say you made the app, state the price model and permissions plainly, and measure with campaign links only where the rules allow them.

## Where people ask for apps

People rarely ask Reddit for “a good app”. They ask for an app with conditions: a habit tracker with a one-time price, a budgeting app that works offline and never asks for a bank login, a meditation app whose free tier is more than a three-day trial. The conditions are the question. An answer that ignores them reads as an advert, even when the app is good.

A SaaS buyer will sit through a demo; a phone user decides from the price model, the permission prompt and the screenshots, and decides fast. So the work starts before anyone writes a reply: knowing which requests your app meets, and which it does not. Those requests turn up in general app communities, deal communities, and topic communities where the app is only a means, such as language learning or personal finance.

## What app communities allowed in 2026

Reddit's site-wide [rules](https://redditinc.com/policies/reddit-rules) ask for authentic participation, no spam, and no misleading anyone about who you are. Each community adds its own layer. Below are the developer rules from archived copies of five communities in August 2026: a sample of how strict things are, not the current text.

**Developer rules in five app communities (archived copies, August 2026)**

| Community | What the rules said | What it means for you |
| --- | --- | --- |
| r/iosapps | 10 karma earned in that community before you post or promote in comments; developers who do not qualify under its trust or transparency rules promote only in a monthly megathread; at most one app post per developer in 30 days, counted even from a removed post; disclose your relationship in comments; no shortened, referral or affiliate links; generative AI and AI-wrapped apps removed | Comment there before you post, and check whether your app counts as AI-based |
| r/androidapps | No self-promotion, tester or feedback requests, in posts or comments; that goes to r/droidappshowcase; only official stores and GitHub are pre-approved link sources | Do not promote your own app there at all; launch posts go to the showcase |
| r/AppHookup | Deals only: no betas, launch deals, freemium apps or weekly to quarterly free trials; promo codes only when at least 500 lifetime codes are on offer, through a distribution site rather than in the post text or comments; links with a ct= campaign token removed automatically | For a real price drop on an established app, with a plain store link |
| r/iOSGaming | Developer promotion was limited to Saturdays; in August 2026 even that was suspended while new rules were written | A list from last year can send you into a closed window |
| r/languagelearning | No self-owned content, apps included, without moderator permission; AI language tools and chatbots not allowed | Ask the moderators before you mention your app at all |

> **Warning:** Rules move. Open the community's rules and pinned posts on the day you post. Our guide to [Reddit's self-promotion rules](https://agentagency.si/guides/reddit-self-promotion-rules) covers what Reddit itself says, and [karma requirements](https://agentagency.si/guides/reddit-karma-requirements) explains why there is no single number. ## Check fit before you reply

Most app request threads are filters. Run your app through them honestly first:

- **Price model.** If the thread asks for “no subscription” and yours is one, skip it or say so in the first line.
- **Platform.** An iOS-only app in an Android request is noise.
- **The free tier.** “Free” that hits a paywall after the first session loses a thread's trust fast.
- **Permissions and data.** Contacts, location, bank login, an account before first use: people ask before they install, so answer first.
- **Offline and privacy.** Some requests want no sign-up and data that stays on the device.

If the app passes, the reply still starts with the answer, and names other apps when they fit better. [Answering tool recommendation threads](https://agentagency.si/guides/answer-tool-recommendation-threads) has worked examples.

## Disclosure, and leaving store reviews alone

Say you made the app, in the reply itself. The FTC's endorsement guidance says employees who mention their company's products should disclose the relationship, that listing your employer on your profile is not enough, and that when it is not obvious a brand is your own, you should say so. The account's operator decides the wording, but platform rules and the law expect material connections to be disclosed. [Disclosure templates](https://agentagency.si/guides/reddit-disclosure-templates) has one-line versions.

The other line developers cross is reviews. Asking a thread to rate the app, or trading codes for reviews, runs into three sets of rules:

- **Apple.** Guideline 5.6.3 forbids manipulating charts, search, reviews or referrals, and 3.2.2 bars forcing a rating to unlock a feature.
- **Google Play.** Its ratings policy prohibits incentivized ratings and reviews, and encouraging reviews that carry codes or links. It also says not to ask for a higher rating when replying to a review.
- **The FTC.** Its rule announced in August 2024 bans fake reviews, certain insider reviews that do not disclose the connection, and incentives conditioned on a review's sentiment.

## Measuring installs from a thread

Store attribution is coarse, and one reply is a small source. Use the store tools, and expect small numbers to stay hidden.

**What each store can tell you about a link**

| Tool | How it works | Limits |
| --- | --- | --- |
| App Store campaign links | A link from App Store Connect with your provider token (pt) and a campaign token (ct) of up to 30 characters, one per community | Counts a first-time download within 24 hours of the click; the most recent link gets the credit; a metric shows only once it reaches 5 in the date range |
| Google Play UTM parameters | utm_source and utm_campaign on the listing link, shown under the ads and referrals traffic source | Small sources are folded into “Other” |
| Play Install Referrer API | The app reads the referrer URL and the click and install-start times | Needs code in the app |

Some communities block tracking: r/AppHookup and r/iOSGaming auto-remove links with a ct= token, and r/iosapps does not allow shortened links, so a plain store link is often the only option. Campaign links also only appear in App Store Connect once the app has analytics data. And a reply can keep getting read long after the 24-hour window closes. Add a one-tap “where did you hear about us?” question to onboarding and note your reply dates next to daily installs. Neither is exact; together they show which communities are worth the time.

## Where an agent helps, and where it does not

The slow part is reading: many communities, rules that change, and requests that mostly do not fit. Agent Agency starts from a link, your website or your App Store page, and writes a [Product DNA](https://agentagency.si/product-dna) from the public pages: who the app is for, how it sounds, what it never says. You approve it, and every agent reads it. Before you approve, check that it states the facts request threads filter on: price model, platforms, permissions, what the free tier includes.

- **Rules first.** The agents find where your buyers ask, read each community's rules before they write, and mention the app only when it answers the question, under a daily cap. Every skipped thread comes with a reason.
- **Approve mode.** Every reply, post and DM waits for your OK. On Autopilot the agents post inside your rules and limits, and the daily report shows what they did.
- **Pace.** Daily limits and quiet hours, and a return to the thread for days to answer follow-ups about price or permissions.
- **Platforms.** Reddit and X are live; YouTube is in testing. See [platforms](https://agentagency.si/platforms).

> **Note:** We read App Store pages today; a Google Play listing does not yet come through with enough detail. For an Android-only app, give your website, or describe the app in the questions you answer when you join.

What an agent cannot do is know your app from the inside: why the widget works the way it does, which feature you cut on purpose. Those details make the best replies, and they come from you.

## Questions

### Which subreddits allow app self-promotion?

Some general app communities do, inside fixed limits such as once per 30 days, and send developers who do not meet their trust rules to a monthly megathread. Others send all developer posts to a separate showcase community. Deal communities take real price drops, not launches. Topic communities may need moderator permission. Check the rules before every post.

### Does posting on Reddit help my App Store ranking?

We have not seen public data that shows it. What a thread can do is bring people to your listing. Measure that with App Store campaign links or Google Play UTM parameters where the community allows tracked links, and with a short question in onboarding.

### Can I give promo codes in exchange for reviews?

No. Google Play prohibits incentives for ratings, Apple forbids manipulating reviews, and the FTC rule bans incentives tied to a review's sentiment. You can give codes away without conditions where a community allows it, in the format that community sets.
