# Getting Consulting Clients From Reddit, Honestly

> Business owners ask Reddit how to hire an HR consultant, judge an SEO retainer or scope a security review long before they contact anyone. Consultants win work there by answering from their own named account, giving real steps, adding a scope note on legal, tax or security topics, disclosing their firm, and mentioning the service only when the thread asks for it.

## Why service buyers ask strangers first

A consultant sells judgement, and buyers form their view of it before the first call. Gartner research reported by [CRM Magazine](https://www.destinationcrm.com/Articles/CRM-Insights/Insight/Buyer-Enablement-Is-the-Key-to-B2B-Sales-127790.aspx) in 2018 found that B2B buyers spend about 17 percent of a purchase meeting potential suppliers, shared across every supplier they consider. Most of the rest goes to their own research and to talks inside the buying group. The figure is old, but consultant guides such as [Overloop's](https://overloop.com/blog/lead-generation-for-consultants) still build on it.

Part of that research happens in public threads, in questions shaped like the ones below. None names a vendor; each asks how to think about a decision, which is a discovery call done once in writing:

- First HR hire at 25 people: bring in a consultant or buy software first?
- Is a fractional CFO worth it at seed stage, and how would I know?
- What should an IT security assessment for a 40-person firm actually cover?
- How do I judge an SEO retainer proposal, and which deliverables are normal?
- Outsource bookkeeping or hire part-time for a 10-person agency?

## Where service questions turn up

**Communities consultants commonly watch, and what each expects**

| Community | Who asks | What a good answer brings |
| --- | --- | --- |
| r/smallbusiness, r/Entrepreneur | Owners deciding what to buy and what to budget | Options, rough effort, what to do first, when not to hire anyone |
| r/HumanResources, r/Accounting | Practitioners inside companies | Peer-level detail; they spot generic answers quickly |
| r/sysadmin, r/projectmanagement | IT and delivery people scoping work | Concrete checklists, tools, and what an outside review should include |
| r/forhire | Clients posting paid jobs | A different motion: formatted hiring posts, not answers |

Hiring boards are a different motion. A March 2026 [Fueler article](https://fueler.io/blog/subreddits-where-freelancers-are-getting-real-projects) describes r/forhire as strictly moderated, with budgets expected in hiring posts and no room for bare links; check the current rules there yourself. For the searches that surface question communities, see [finding subreddits where buyers ask](https://agentagency.si/guides/find-subreddits-where-buyers-ask).

## Answer from your own name, not the firm's

In consulting the product is a person, so the account should be one too. A firm account reads as marketing before the second sentence; the partner who has run twenty of these projects reads as advice. The trade-off is covered in [brand account or founder account](https://agentagency.si/guides/brand-account-or-founder-account).

Reddit's [rules](https://redditinc.com/policies/reddit-rules) do not require your real name, but they ask you not to set out to mislead others or pose as someone you are not. The podcast [Marketing Made Easy for HR Consultants](https://marketingmadeeasyforhrconsultants.buzzsprout.com/2238493/episodes/17334653-reddit-for-hr-leads-you-re-joking-right) suggests a profile that reads like a short LinkedIn page, with what you do and a link to your site, because readers who like an answer go and look.

A profile is not a disclosure. The FTC's [endorsement guidance](https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/resources/ftcs-endorsement-guides-what-people-are-asking) says people who own or work for a business should state that connection where they talk about it, because readers of one post may never see the profile. One plain sentence in the reply does it; our [disclosure templates](https://agentagency.si/guides/reddit-disclosure-templates) have wordings that fit a comment.

## The shape of an answer that wins clients

Service questions need longer answers than tool questions. A [Wisp guide](https://www.wisp.blog/blog/how-to-plug-your-productservices-with-comments-on-reddit-without-breaking-self-promotion-rules) on mentioning products and services in comments suggests aiming for at least three to five paragraphs, and one of its bad examples is a web-design agency reply that opens with a starting price and an offer of a free quote. This order works for most consulting threads.

1. **Name the real problem** Restate the situation in a sentence or two. Often the question asked is not the decision that matters, and saying so is the most useful line in the thread.
2. **Give the steps you would give a client** What to check first, what can be done in-house, what it costs in time. The answer should help even if the reader never hires anyone.
3. **Add the scope note** Which country your experience covers, and what you cannot judge from one paragraph.
4. **Disclose, and mention the firm only if it fits** Say you do this for a living. Name your firm when the poster asks who to hire; otherwise the disclosure is enough.
5. **Stay for the follow-ups** Readers decide in the replies under your answer. Answer there, not in private messages.

> **Illustrative example:** Illustrative reply to the first-HR-hire question: "At 25 people the first fix is usually paperwork, not people: contracts, a handbook and a leave policy that match where your staff actually work. Software helps once those exist. I'd list what you have, then decide. Disclosure: I run a small HR consultancy, and this is general information for the UK, not advice on your case."

## Employment, tax and security answers

On HR, finance, legal-adjacent and security questions a reader may act on your answer as if you had reviewed their case. These habits keep it useful without becoming advice nobody hired you to give.

- **Say where your experience applies.** Employment and tax rules differ by country and often by state.
- **Separate the general from the specific.** Explain how the problem usually works, then name the facts that would change the answer.
- **Keep it out of DMs.** Asking for documents in private reads as selling. The podcast above allows a short, low-key chat offer, but warns that people can block you if you come across as salesy.
- **Check your professional body's rules.** If you belong to one, it may limit what members say or advertise in public.

## What progress looks like

Consulting sales cycles are long, so community work shows up weeks or months later, and rarely as a click. Watch for quieter signs: a discovery call where the prospect mentions a thread, or a referral who found your answer first. The HR podcast notes that useful answers can stay findable in search for years, which suits a business that sells the same expertise again and again. Five excellent answers in the right community beat fifty short ones everywhere.

## Where Agent Agency fits

For a consultant the cost is time: reading many threads to find the few worth answering, then writing the long reply. You paste your site's link; we read up to five public pages and write a [Product DNA](https://agentagency.si/product-dna) of who you work with, how you sound and what you never say, such as tax advice outside the countries you practise in. You approve it.

You connect your own account and set the persona the agent writes as. It reads each community's rules, keeps to daily limits and quiet hours, and comes back to a thread for days to answer replies. Your firm comes up only when it answers the question, under a daily cap. Disclosure is your decision as the operator; Reddit's rules and consumer-protection law expect material connections to be disclosed, as our [FTC disclosure explainer](https://agentagency.si/blog/ftc-disclosure-for-ai-agents-on-social) sets out.

**Consulting answers by hand and with an agent**

| Task | By hand | With Agent Agency |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Finding questions in your field | Searches between client work | The agents find the threads and show why each one is in |
| Knowing each community's rules | Read once, then from memory | The agent reads them too |
| Writing the long answer | You write it | Drafted from your approved Product DNA |
| Scope notes and disclosure | You add them | You set them in the DNA and check them in Approve mode |

> **Note:** Because your name and your professional reputation sit on every reply, we suggest Approve mode, where every post, comment and DM waits for your OK. The agents write in a voice that fits the role without claiming experience they do not have, so put the work you have actually done into the DNA.

Reddit and X are live, and YouTube is in testing. LinkedIn and Quora, two natural channels for consultants, are planned with no date yet; the [platforms page](https://agentagency.si/platforms) keeps the current list.

## Questions

### Is it allowed to answer Reddit questions about the service I sell?

Reddit's site-wide rules do not forbid it outright. They ask for authentic participation, no spam, and no deliberately misleading others or impersonating anyone. Each subreddit adds its own rules, and some forbid any self-promotion, so read them first. Disclose your connection in the reply itself, since the FTC says a profile mention is not enough.

### Should I send a private message after a good answer?

Usually not. Answer follow-ups in the thread, where other readers can judge you too. The HR consultant podcast cited on this page allows a low-key chat offer but warns that people can block you if you push, and unsolicited pitches read as spam. If the poster messages you first, reply as you would to any referral.

### Can Agent Agency post on LinkedIn for me?

Not yet. LinkedIn is planned with no date. Reddit and X are live today, and YouTube is in testing. Many consultants already have LinkedIn routines; Reddit and X reach owners and practitioners who ask in public and may not follow you anywhere else.
